Care home and charity work together to give young homeless people a taste of a new career

Residents and the team at Care UK’s the Willows residential care home in Middlesbrough welcomed some visitors from the Community Campus charity to their home.

The charity, which helps to house and train young homeless people in Teeside, approached Ruth Catton, the home’s Manager, after some of the young people they work with showed an interest in care work.

Ruth said: “The Community Campus team do a wonderful job creating affordable, supported housing for young people and training them in life skills as well as NVQs. So far, they have focused mainly on house building and maintenance qualifications, but more people are showing an interest in a career in caring and we were very keen to help.”

The young people visited the home for a tea party with residents and a chance to talk to Ruth and her team about their work.

Ruth said: “The residents enjoyed talking to their young visitors and hearing about what they are doing and the team were keen answer questions and share their passion for caring with a new generation of potential carers.”

Rachel Wooding from Community Campus said: “Community Campus are more than just a roof for young homeless people in Teesside.  We support young people in all aspects of their lives and training and employment form a big part of the work that we do with them.

“This will give our young people the chance to experience a care home environment and training opportunities in social care and we thank Care UK for this opportunity.”
