Cardiff care home residents joined by local youngsters for World Book Day

Residents at a care home in Cardiff have been reading classic fairytales to celebrate World Book Day with local school children.

Cardiff may seem a little quieter than usual after residents from Care UK’s Llys Cyncoed, on Cycnoed Road, welcomed children from Rhydypenau School into the home to read classic fairytales as part of World Book Day.

The children, who had been practising their best character voices, sat with the residents and read to them, so that they could enjoy a retelling of famous childhood stories. The residents also got into character to read to the children and tell their own fairytales.

Commenting on the morning, 89-year-old resident, Jean Turner, said: “I have always loved to read, as a child I always had my nose buried in a book, and I am still an avid book worm today!”

Carly Hunt, General Manager at Llys Cyncoed, said: “We’ve had a wonderful time reading stories here at Llys Cyncoed. Seeing the children enjoying reading so much and the residents creating their own fairytales for the youngsters was wonderful to see. Children’s literature is often the first key to unlocking our imaginations and nurturing a lifelong love of reading – so it was great to welcome Rhydypenau School to Llys Cyncoed.

“Intergenerational relationships can be incredibly beneficial for both younger and older people and can provide residents with a sense of wellbeing and purpose—so we would like to extend our thanks to Rhydypenau School for visiting us here at Llys Cyncoed.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Llys Cyncoed provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, and incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The home has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
