Newmarket care home residents visit WWII museum

Residents at a care home in Newmarket enjoyed a nostalgic journey back in time during a visit to a war museum.

The team at Care UK’s Kentford Manor, on Jeddah Way, organised a special trip for residents to visit the Duxford Imperial War Museum to commemorate Remembrance Day.

During their visit, residents received a guided tour of the museum where they were able to look at memorabilia from the War and reflect on their personal experiences from their own lives during WW2 with the museum’s team of volunteers.

Among the visitors was 91-year-old Tony Harrington, who was just six years old when he was evacuated to Devon with his sister for two years, before later being called up for service as an ariel photographer with RAF in Northern Ireland, Belfast.

Speaking of the visit, Tony said: “A great moment for me was seeing the Avro Lancaster aircraft. When I was an ariel photographer these planes were used to carry out ariel surveys and maps. It was amazing to see it all at Duxford”.

Kat Rayment, General Manager at Kentford Manor, said: “At Kentford Manor, we’re passionate about creating enriching experiences for residents that bring joy and stimulate meaningful memories.

“This visit to the Duxford Imperial War Museum was not only a chance for residents to reconnect with history, but also to share their own stories from a time that shaped so many lives. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the visit which was a truly special day for everyone involved."

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Kentford Manor incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a number of suites to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
