A care home in Norwich boarded the Willy Wonka express in celebration of Roald Dahl Day
The team at Care UK’s Cavell Court, on Dragonfly Lane, transformed the home into Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory to raise money for the Roald Dahl Children’s Charity.
The team and residents dressed as their favourite characters and were whisked away to the enchanting worlds of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach’.
Residents also enjoyed reminiscing on reading to their children and grandchildren and talking about their love for reading.
Head Chef, Tom Barnes, cooked up a themed lunch and dinner, featuring ‘The Witches green pea soup’, ‘The BFG’s Snozzcumber sandwiches’, and ‘James’ peach crumble’. Much to the residents’ delight, there was also a ‘Willy Wonka’s chocolate cake’, which everyone enjoyed while playing a game of ‘find the golden ticket’.
Local baker, Kerry Roberts, at Kerry’s Bouqcakes, also served up cupcakes which were raffled off, raising £131 for the Roald Dahl Children’s Charity.
Commenting on the day, resident Irene Beckett, aged 98, said: “What a great day, everyone looked fantastic. It was lovely to see the Roald Dahl books again and knowing how much enjoyment my family have had reading these over the years. We have been watching the films this week too, which has been lovely.”
Karen Curle, Home Manager at Cavell Court, said: “We had a brilliant time hosting a day to celebrate everyone’s favourite childhood Roald Dahl novels.
“Here at Cavell Court, we’re passionate about hosting exciting activities and always looking for an excuse to dress up, and Roald Dahl Day provided the perfect opportunity to do just this. It was lovely to see residents sharing stories of their own and reminiscing on their time as parents and grandparents reading stories.
“I would like to say a big thank you to the team for putting on a fantastic show and residents for truly getting into character!”
Cavell Court is a modern care home which provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
