Getting Bury St Edmunds talking – care home to help local people understand more about dementia

Two care homes in Bury St Edmunds are inviting the local community to learn more about dementia.

On Tuesday 25th July, from 2pm-4pm, Care UK’s Davers Court, on Shakers Lane, is inviting members of the community to a special event, in partnership with Glastonbury Court, to learn more about dementia by delving into the topics not usually discussed.

Aimed at those caring for a loved one living with the condition, the session will provide practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with the condition.

Dr Nori Graham, Vice President of the Alzheimer’s Society, will be leading the session and helping to explain what it’s like to live with dementia, as well as discuss the types of support available for at-home carers and advice for engaging with a loved one living with dementia.

The educational event follows the launch of Care UK’s free guide, One step at a time – A video guide to navigating dementia, which offers insight and guidance in a video format. Tapping into more than 40 years of experience providing care for people living with dementia, the videos include detailed explanations and practical advice from Care UK’s experts, including Head of Nursing, Care and Dementia, Suzanne Mumford, managers and team members from care homes across the country, plus residents’ families and carers.

Sophie Evans, Home Manager at Davers Court, said: “We understand how difficult it can be to navigate the changes that come when caring for a loved one living with dementia.

“With extensive experience caring for those living with the condition, the team here at Davers Court and Glastonbury Court have a wealth of knowledge and advice they are keen to share with those in the community.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Dr Nori Graham for what we anticipate will be an incredibly insightful afternoon for all involved.”
