A care home in Bury St Edmunds is welcoming carers to its monthly support group, designed to help local people caring for an older loved one.
On Monday 8th April, from 10am-12pm, then every first Monday of each month, the community is invited to attend the free Carers Café at Care UK’s Davers Court, on Shakers Lane, where carers will be able to speak openly about their experiences in a welcoming, friendly environment.
The session aims to provide local carers with advice on support available in the community as well as opportunities to discuss financial guidance, wellbeing assessments and the chance to meet other carers and share experiences – including for those with a loved one living with dementia.
Loved ones in attendance will also have the opportunity to take part in a host of activities at Davers Court’s Day Centre while family carers meet in the café, and to enjoy refreshments.
According to a recent survey, commissioned by Care UK, eight in ten adults believe dementia is still misunderstood, with 69 percent of the nation believing it’s a subject which is not talked about enough in society. Many people also admit finding the condition uncomfortable to discuss –something Care UK is hoping to change with the launch of The Big Dementia Conversation earlier this year and by hosting regular support sessions for the community.
Sophie Evans, Home Manager at Davers Court, said: “At Davers Court, we strive to create a sense of belonging within the home and our wider community, aiming to provide a positive impact on local people by building support systems for our neighbours. We want to create a cheerful environment at the café where everyone will feel comfortable, and be able to relax and enjoy themselves.
“We believe that no carer should feel that they are alone, and we’re looking forward to welcoming some new faces and old friends for a chat over a cup of tea and slice of cake.”
Davers Court is a modern care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable the residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
