National care inspectors praise Stonehaven care home

A national care watchdog has given a Stonehaven care home its seal of approval, with relatives and residents praising its caring team members.

The Care Inspectorate, the regulator for health and social care in Scotland, rated Care UK’s Mowat Court, on Kirkton Road, ‘very good’ in three areas, following an unannounced inspection.

The home is now rated ‘very good’ in its leadership, team, and how well care and support is planned, as well as being rated ‘good’ for the home setting and support for resident wellbeing.

Promoting a holistic approach to care, the report highlighted the strong relationships team members have formed with residents, treating them “with kindness and respect”. Inspectors noted how the teams’ “friendly and humourous interactions” put residents at ease, allowing team members to better support those in their care to live independent and fulfilling lives.

Inspectors observed the “homely atmosphere” created by team members, who spend time getting to know residents and their history and interests, allowing them to provide activity plans tailored to each resident’s needs.

One resident commented: "The staff are excellent, they are all so kind and caring and nothing is ever a bother for any of them."

The team, which was awarded a ‘very good’ rating, also organise a range of meaningful activities for residents, including events to mark the changing seasons, helping residents to remain orientated to the pattern of the year and stay connected to the wider world. Residents are also supported to maintain strong relationships with family and loved ones through a flexible approach to visiting.

One resident said: "I love the trishaws and getting out and about. There's something for us to do every day, it's great.”

Inspectors were impressed with the supportive culture promoted at the home, with a “sense of togetherness” among team members allowing for a “pleasant and positive atmosphere” for residents to benefit from. The management team has ensured that members of the care team can approach them at any time for support, harnessing a shared learning culture between the team.

One team member commented: “It’s a great place to work.” Another team member said: “There is a great team ethos here.”

Susan Ashton, Home Manager at Mowat Court, said: “Everyone at Mowat Court works hard to provide the highest possible standards of care to all residents and their families in a warm, comfortable environment, so I’m proud we received a ‘Good’ Care Inspectorate rating.

“Every resident is unique – so why should their care plan be any different? We pride ourselves in the high-quality tailored care we provide, enabling residents to lead fulfilling lives in a warm, peaceful environment that has been designed to promote independence and support those who live at the home.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Mowat Court for their dedication, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families. They are what makes our care home a home for so many residents, and I’m grateful for everything they do on a daily basis.”

To assess service standards at Mowat Court, the Care Inspectorate inspectors spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.

Mowat Court is a modern care home which provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
