“Love is all you need!” 100-year-old Buckingham care home resident shares the secret to a long life

A 100-year-old Buckingham care home resident has revealed the secret to living a long and happy life.

A very special birthday celebration took place at Care UK’s Maids Moreton Hall, on Church Street, when resident Gwen Edwards turned 100 years ‘young’.

Reflecting on her many happy years, she revealed the secret ingredient to a long life is love: “Love is all you need to be happy”.

To celebrate, the care home team decorated the lounge with balloons and banners and the home’s head chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy at a surprise afternoon tea party. Guests in the home’s lounge included her relatives, friends and the extended family of Maids Moreton team members and residents.

Gwen was born on 7 November 1922 in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire. Passionate about helping others succeed, Gwen studied at Bingley College, where she gained her teaching qualifications. After graduating, Gwen began her teaching career in Birmingham with nursery and infant children, before later moving back to her hometown of Ecclesfield.

Interested in gardening and the outdoors, Gwen joined history clubs and the Women’s Institute in her later years. She continues to enjoy sharing her interests at Maids Moreton Hall with fellow residents and team members through the home’s gardening and history clubs.

Gwen has a daughter, Helen, and a son, Simon, and one granddaughter, Emily – who regularly visit Gwen at Maids Moreton Hall.

Ina Almasan, General Manager at Maids Moreton Hall, said: “Here at Maids Moreton, we always like to throw a party for special milestones – and Gwen’s 100th birthday certainly called for a celebration!

“It was fantastic to help her celebrate this incredible milestone with her family and friends here at Maids Moreton Hall with a surprise afternoon tea party and to raise a glass to her fantastic milestone, so cheers to Gwen!”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Maids Moreton incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the home has been configured to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
