A care home in Weymouth was joined by some unusual friends for a special afternoon of animal fun.
Residents at Care UK’s Anning House, on Cross Road, gathered to welcome two friendly alpacas, Alfie and Sandy from Alpaca Adventure into the home’s gardens where they received plenty of fuss and attention.
As part of the special session, residents learnt about the history and characteristics of alpacas, as well as other interesting facts about the calming animals.
Animal therapy plays a big part in life at Anning House, which also has two resident Guinea pigs and a number of chickens who live in the gardens of the home. Residents help take care of the animals by collecting eggs from the chickens as well as cuddling and feeding them.
Michelle Harwood, General Manager at Anning House, said: “We had a wonderful afternoon meeting Alfie and Sandy.
“Here at Anning House, we are always looking for new and exciting activities for residents to enjoy. We know animal therapy has been proven to be incredibly beneficial for residents from our resident animals, as it can be calming, prompt conversations, and put a smile on everyone’s faces. Alpacas are known for being gentle animals, which makes them perfect for care home visits.
“It was so lovely to welcome the two alpacas into the home, and we look forward to seeing them again very soon!”
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Anning House incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The home provides full-time residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
