Care UK has picked up two trophies at the National Dementia Care Awards in Winchester, winning despite strong competition from care providers across the UK.
Care UK’s dementia expert Suzanne Mumford, Head of Nursing, Care and Dementia is the winner in the Best Dementia Care Inspiring Leader category. Shona Bradbury, Home Manager at Appleby House care home is the winner in the Best Dementia Care Manager category.
These awards are held annually and recognise the very best in dementia care across the sector, paying tribute to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding performance within their field of work.
On winning an award Suzanne said, “Looking back over my lifetime of work in dementia care, it is amazing to see the progress that has been made in the care sector since I started out in 1980. I am delighted to have been able to make a small contribution and amazed this has been recognised so generously – it’s always lovely to have your hard work acknowledged but this one is extra special! I am grateful to my team members who are always ready to support me and who are passionate about providing excellent dementia care to residents in all our homes.”
Suzanne has developed an Approach to Care (ATC) team, made up of experienced nurses who support the home teams to deliver outstanding care. The ATC team members undertake advanced dementia training, which they cascade to all home colleagues, in order to provide day-to-day best practice dementia guidance.
Speaking about winning the award, Shona said, “I was delighted to be named the Best Dementia Care Manager at the awards. I believe in dedicated, compassionate leadership and always strive to empower my team to deliver the best possible care. I have been working as a registered manager for 22 years and I have been at Appleby House for eight years. I am thrilled to have been recognised for my work and hope to continue to build strong relationships with my team and residents.”
During her time at Appleby House Shona has implemented a number of initiatives to make the home a more enjoyable place for people living with dementia.
