Enfield care home steps up to support local charity with £700 donation

An Enfield care home has raised funds for a charity that supports those living with dementia. 

Residents at Care UK’s Elizabeth Lodge, on Pennington Drive, have put their best foot forward to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society by walking 31 miles in 31 days around local beauty spots – with £717 collected in total across the month. 

 

The team were inspired by one resident, Stan, who, prior to moving to Elizabeth Lodge, got back into walking during the pandemic lockdowns, often walking three miles a day. Team members decided to take advantage of the autumnal blue skies and planned scenic walks around London. 

Always up for a challenge and wanting to raise funds for those in need, the team joined forces with residents to walk 31 miles in 31 days and created their own bucket to collect money along the way from passers-by. 

Commenting on the walks, resident Stan said: “I have loved every day of our walks. Along the way we discussed the lovely houses and how the area has changed over the years. It has been great to get some beautiful, autumnal fresh air”. 

Michelle Sampang, Home Manager at Elizabeth Lodge said: “Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, and a condition most of us know far too well, whether through watching the struggle of a friend or family member or simply hearing that someone has developed the illness. 

 

“As a home which specialises in dementia care, we’re always looking for activities and events which we can host to help raise awareness within the local community. This idea provided a wonderful opportunity to get our walking boots on and plan autumnal walks around the local area for residents and the Elizabeth Lodge team to get involved in – all while raising funds to support the vital services provided by the Alzheimer’s Society. 

“It’s been great to see the residents enjoying the autumnal colours of the great outdoors at this time of year and socialising with one another and the local community along their many walks around the Surrey countryside. We are delighted to have raised such a fantastic amount and to be supporting this incredible charity who provide an invaluable service. We look forward to continuing our walking club when the warmer weather returns.”
