Dancing shoes at the ready – Bromsgrove care home hosts its own carnival

Residents at a Bromsgrove care home marched to the beat of their own steel drum for a special celebration. 

Care UK’s Chandler Court, on Recreation Road, hosted its very own belated version of Notting Hill Carnival, complete with handmade headpieces and Caribbean music. 

 

Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest carnival, is an annual celebration of Caribbean culture held in London in late August. In 2021, when the event was cancelled for the second year in a row due to coronavirus restrictions, team members at Chandler Court decided to get busy decorating the home with tropical bunting and colourful balloons to bring a taste of the carnival to the home. 

In true Notting Hill Carnival style, residents wore feather headdresses which they created themselves in preparation for the event. They enjoyed an array of Caribbean foods and drinks –

including jerk chicken, rice and peas, fish stew, Jamaican ginger cake and rum and raisin chocolate truffles – and everyone tapped their feet to Caribbean music. 

Margaret Newman, a resident at Chandler Court care home, said: “I loved all the bright colours. It really brought a lot of excitement to the afternoon – it was great fun.”

Vongai Mushinga, Home Manager at Chandler Court said: “Our carnival-themed event was a great success, and we loved hosting our very own street party in the garden."

“It was a shame to see Notting Hill Carnival cancelled for the second year in a row, but this inspired us to host our own celebration and bring the carnival to Bromsgrove."
