Dancing shoes at the ready – care home brings carnival spirit to Bury St Edmunds

Residents at a Bury St Edmunds care home marched to the beat of their own steel drum for a special celebration.

Care UK’s Davers Court, on Shakers Lane, hosted its very own version of Notting Hill Carnival, complete with handcrafted masks, music and dancing.

Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest carnival, is an annual celebration of Caribbean culture held in London in late August. In 2021, with the event cancelled for the second year in a row due to coronavirus restrictions, team members at Davers Court got their creative heads together and decided to get busy bringing a taste of the carnival to the home.

In true Notting Hill Carnival style, residents wore brightly coloured masks – which they created themselves - in preparation for the event and tapped their feet to Caribbean inspired music, who helped everyone get into the party spirit.

One resident, 87-year-old June Spooner, said “I really enjoyed the Davers Court Notting Hill Carnival – it was lovely to have everyone together, laughing and dancing again after so long.”

Sally Shadbolt, Home Manager at Davers Court, said: “It’s a shame to see Notting Hill Carnival being cancelled for the second year in a row, but this inspired us to host our own celebration and bring the carnival to residents instead."

“Here at Davers Court, we’re always looking for fun and exciting ways to get residents up and active, and themed events like the Notting Hill Carnival are a great way of doing just that. On top of inspiring everyone to find out more about different cultures, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to get our dancing shoes on and showcase our best moves."

I’d like to say a big thank you to the team, who worked tirelessly to organise a fantastic celebration for us all to enjoy.
