A Mildenhall care home was delighted to celebrate the great British brew for National Tea Day.
Residents and team members at Care UK’s Mildenhall Lodge, on St John’s Close, enjoyed a very special afternoon tea, complete with cakes, biscuits, and fancy dress, to mark the nationwide celebrations.
With Care UK homes across the country getting through around 12 million cups of tea a year between them, sitting down for a drink and a chat forms an important part of resident life, and can be incredibly beneficial for older people, by offering a relaxed way to engage in conversation and increase hydration.
Noby Chelathadathil Jacob, Home Manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating National Tea Day, and getting dressed up for the occasion!
“Taking some time out of the day to sit and chat with other residents or team members is incredibly important, as it provides an opportunity for everyone to learn more about each other and make new friends. It can also provide time for reminiscence, as the drink is linked to so many different memories.”
Earlier this year, Care UK launched a nationwide initiative which aims to celebrate food as a tool for reminiscence. As part of the activity, residents took part in a virtual tasting session with BBC food historian, Dr Polly Russell, from Back in Time for… designed to transport residents back to their younger days. The session included the history of the afternoon tea, which sparked many memories, and a debate about how to make the best cup of tea.
Mildenhall Lodge is a modern care home which provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, it has its very own café and hair salon, and there is plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
