Residents at two care homes in Bury St Edmunds celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!
This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Glastonbury Court, on Glastonbury Road, and Davers Court, on Shakers Lane, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.
As part of the celebrations, residents created their own homemade bird feeders for the garden, and residents at Glastonbury Court were also joined by the Bury St Edmunds Beavers group for a morning of birdwatching.
Sharlene Van Tonder, home manager at Glastonbury Court and Davers Court, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Glastonbury Court and Davers Court, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s Birdwatch event.
“Everyone enjoyed creating our very own bird feeders, which have taken pride of place in our gardens. Connecting with nature is extremely beneficial for older people and can promote positive social interaction, improve wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. This can also be helpful for those living with dementia, as it can help to conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.
“I’d like to say thank you to the Bury St Edmunds Beavers group for joining us and making the day so special. The bird feeders look wonderful and we can’t wait to see the new birds they bring into our garden!”
