Bird is the word! Eye care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birds

Residents at a care home in Eye are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25^th January to Monday 27^th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the birds in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Hartismere Place, on Castleton Way, will be celebrating the best of British birds by creating their own bird boxes and feeders, as well as playing lots of avian-themed games.

The home has also invited local photographer, Allan Warner, to join them for the occasion to host a photography exhibition featuring some of Suffolk’s magnificent birds.

Abhilash Gopi, home manager at Hartismere Place, explained why exploring our wildlife is an important activity: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.

“Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation.  

“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. We’re looking forward to welcoming Allan into the home to celebrate the best of British birds with us too!”
