Residents at a care home in Colchester are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.
Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as enjoying a visit to the Abberton Reservoir.
Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Tall Trees, on Mile End Road, will be celebrating the best of British birds by playing bird-themed games, taking part in a birdsong reminiscence session, as well as counting the birds in their garden.
The home will also be inviting children from Cheeky Monkeys Nursery along to make birdfeeders for the garden.
Alice Banda, home manager at Tall Trees, explained why discovering our local wildlife is so important: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.
“Spending time outdoors and connecting with the nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours outdoors are also great for providing sensory stimulation.
“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. Residents are especially looking forward to welcoming the youngsters from Cheeky Monkeys to celebrate the best of British birds with us!”
