The specialist dementia team at Care UK’s Tall Trees care home in Colchester have won through to the finals of a prestigious national care awards.
On Friday 18th October, the team, from the home in Mile End Road, will be grilled by National Dementia Award judges at the London Hilton Metropole, Edgware Road.
The team have passed through the first round of the contest to be named the country’s Best Dementia Team, and judges say they will be looking for further evidence that the team “has developed and maintained a superb standard of care.”
The team were nominated for the award by Care UK’s regional director Violet Kotu. Violet said: “The whole team is dedicated to improving the lives of all residents and they are always looking for new ways of enhancing residents’ wellbeing and quality of life.
“This has included developing an incredible range of activities and trips that are designed to rekindle, for all the participants, their joy and zest for living.”
Activities have included trips to a golf course and parks where they fed the ducks and to the seaside where residents walked along the promenade and ate fish and chips.
Home manager Katherine Foley said: “These trips are vital to improve quality of life and to build relationships between our residents, the care team and their loved ones, and to give all an opportunity to do something new.
“The trips trigger so many memories and the carers can capture them and learn more about the person, their history and their interests. This makes creating genuinely person-centred care packages possible. It takes a great deal of work and organisation, but the team know that the rewards reaped for the residents are immense. “
The winners of the 4th National Dementia Awards will be announced at a gala event on 6th November 2013 at Colwick Hall Hotel, Nottingham.
