“Fresh air and good food” is the secret to a long life

A resident at a care home in Ashford recently celebrated his 100th birthday and shared his secret to living a long and happy life.

Norman Flisher, a resident at Care UK’s Montfort Manor, on Kennington Road, marked his 100th birthday with a party at the home, where the team decorated the lounge with balloons and banners and the Head Chef made a special cake.

Norman was born in Boughton Monchelsea, Kent, on 27th February 1925 and enjoyed many jobs over the years, including working as a farmer, coach driver and also a lorry driver for Shepherd Neame Brewer.

He has always been the life of the party and could often be found playing darts at the pub with a pint of brown ale. He also enjoyed football and fishing in his spare time.

Norman proposed to his girlfriend Kathleen whilst on a trip on his motorbike, and they married in 1948. Together, they had six children, who gave them 12 beautiful grandchildren.

When asked what the secret to a long and happy life was, as he celebrated his newly minted centenarian status, Norman said: “Plenty of fresh air and of course, good food! Fish and chips is my favourite.”

Joanne Eaton, Home Manager at Montfort Manor, said: “It has been great to celebrate Norman’s 100th birthday and him reaching such a big milestone in life.

“Here at Montfort Manor, we know how to have a good time and understand the importance of helping residents live fulfilling lives, and celebrating centenarian birthdays such as Norman’s is no exception. It was great to see Norman enjoying himself and sharing his wisdom, as well as taking us down memory lane. Here’s to Norman!”

Martlet Manor is a purpose-built care home which has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and specialist dementia care for older people in Ashford, as well as short-term respite care, and incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies, including its own cinema, hair salon and café.
