Witney care home residents and nursery children join forces for Harvest Festival fun

A care home in Witney has joined forces with children from a local nursery to celebrate Harvest Festival.

Residents at Care UK’s Millers Grange, on Curbridge Road, were joined by children from St Hugh of Lincoln Nursery for an a-maize-ing afternoon as they celebrated the annual festival.

To mark the occasion, a foodbank drop off point was launched at Millers Grange to collect extra, unused or unwanted non-perishable food items, and the items collected have since been donated to Witney Foodbank to help local people in crisis.

The residents and children also came together to sing Harvest festival songs, including Big Red Combine Harvester, Autumn Leaves are Falling and Pumpkin Head Sitting on a Window.

Commenting on the afternoon’s celebrations, resident Eileen, aged 94, said: “It was lovely to have the children in the home for Harvest Festival.

“I remember going round on a horse and cart with Sunday school in the 1930s, singing Hymns and collecting food from the farmers for Harvest festival. It’s very important that we give thanks for the food that farmers produce.”

In addition, Millers Grange held a harvest-themed Friendship Café with local carers in the community, to reflect and show gratitude for the food that they have. Visitors shared their caring experiences and had the opportunity to make new friends.

Rachel Scurr, Home Manager at Millers Grange, said: “It was fantastic to welcome the children from St Hugh of Lincoln Nursery to Millers Grange, to celebrate the annual Harvest Festival tradition and explore its importance today.

“Harvest Festival is a day in the calendar where we can reflect and show gratitude for the food that we have, while serving as an opportunity to connect with others, regardless of age or background, and celebrate what makes Witney a great place to call home.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to our foodbank. Everyone had an a-maize-ing day and we’re already looking forward to our next event with the children from St Hugh of Lincoln Nursery as we race towards Christmas!”
