Slough care home creates spectacular poppy display

Highlighted home news

A care home in Slough has created a beautifully poignant display to mark Remembrance Day.

Residents and team members from Care UK’s Oak House, on Wexham Road, worked together to create a delightful display of knitted poppies and paintings in honour of those who lost their lives to war.

Made of an estimated 150 poppies, all of which were created by members of the home’s knitting club, the display also features dozens of paintings of poppy fields. The paintings were lovingly created by talented residents and team members during weekly sessions.

Robert Coffey, one of the residents involved in the project, said: “I enjoyed the project and I am very proud of the final outcome.

“Remembrance Day is a time to honour those who fought in the war. By celebrating this day, we pay our respects to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for our countrymen.”

The beautiful artwork will remain on display throughout the home for everyone to admire.

Agnieszka Klimkowicz-Buda, Home Manager at Oak House, added: “We are so proud of the team, residents and everyone who has worked tirelessly to create such a beautiful display.

"Crafts, as well as other creative activities, have many therapeutic benefits for older people, particularly those living with dementia, by keeping their brains busy and providing a sense of purpose. More importantly, Remembrance Day holds a very special meaning to residents, as many of them may have served in the forces or lived through World War II and heard stories from their parents or older siblings.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed to our wonderful display by creating a poppy or painting; every single one of our visitors has been absolutely amazed by the result. We’d also like to invite everyone to come and stop by to see our creations for themselves.”

Oak House provides residential, nursing and short-term respite care, as well as specialist dementia care. The home, which has its very own café, hair salon and cinema room, enables residents to live active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence.
