A care home in High Wycombe marked the festival of light, Diwali, with an afternoon celebrating Hindu culture.
Residents at Care UK’s Ridley Manor, on The Row, celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, with an Indian-inspired lunch and a special performance from team members.
As part of the celebrations, the home was decorated with lights and lanterns made by the residents. Team members also wore traditional Indian clothes, and residents joined the staff to dance along to Bollywood tunes.
Residents had their hands painted with henna and colourful tattoos, while learning more about the history of Diwali. They also enjoyed traditional Indian cuisine prepared by the Home's Head Chef, which included samosas, onion bhaji, aloo tikki, and vegetable pakoras.
Commenting on the event, 75-year-old resident Stephanie Wills, said: "It was such an enjoyable afternoon learning about Indian culture. The delicious food was definitely my favourite part! I also discovered why lights are such an important part of the Diwali festival."
Estelle Adriaans, General Manager at Ridley Manor, said: “Everyone had a de-light-ful day celebrating Diwali, learning more about Indian traditions and trying various delicacies.
“At Ridley Manor, we are committed to ensuring the home is a welcoming and supportive place for everyone, where different cultures and interests are regularly celebrated through memorable activities which promote positive wellbeing.”
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Ridley Manor incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The home provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia and respite care. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
