Chester care home creates unique remembrance display

A care home in Chester is inviting the community to a special art exhibition to mark Remembrance Day.

On Saturday 9th November, from 2pm-4pm, Care UK’s Deewater Grange, on Chester Road, is inviting local people to view the resident’s artwork as part of a special tribute to the British Legion.

Residents put colouring pencils to paper and created a host of drawings depicting poppies and images of remembrance.

Resident Geoffrey Chew, aged 80, has always been good with his hands and in his younger years invented a water flow measurement tool in his garden shed. Geoff now enjoys art therapy classes with Alison Jones, from Memory Art Club, along with resident Sally Webster, aged 87, who enjoys painting water colour flowers from scratch.

Sally Cooper, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: “We are so proud of the team and residents who have created a beautiful display for such a worthy cause. This time of year holds a special meaning for many residents, especially those who lived through the Second World War, served in the armed forces themselves or had family members who did, and getting creative during art therapy sessions offers residents a way to reminisce and share treasured memories.

“Art therapy plays a huge part in life here at Deewater Grange, so we were delighted to put our colouring pencils and paintbrushes to paper to mark such an important day. Arts and crafts are incredibly beneficial for older people, as it can prompt conversations and have a calming effect, particularly those living with dementia, by providing a sense of purpose.

“We look forward to welcoming local people into Deewater Grange for an afternoon admiring the residents’ fabulous artwork!”

Deewater Grange is a state-of-the-art home which provides full-time residential, dementia and nursing care. The home has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, and incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, including its own café, bar, cinema as well as a hair and beauty salon. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
