Enfield care home enjoys a day of sport with the local community

With the Olympics underway, a local care home decided to kick off the summer of sport with their very own version of the Games.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Elizabeth Lodge, on Pennington Drive, welcomed the local community for a special day of family fun competing in traditional sports day challenges, proving Paris has nothing on Enfield this summer.

The event came as Elizabeth Lodge joined The Big Care UK Sports Day, which sees over 130 Care UK homes across the UK host sports days for the local community and showcase what life in a care home is really like this summer.

Guests soaked up the sporting atmosphere and had the chance to win their own gold medals with an afternoon of fun and games, including relay races, dartboard competitions, and water games.

To fuel up ahead of the games, visitors enjoyed a traditional summer barbecue cooked by the home’s talented head chef, alongside ice creams and slushies.

Commenting on the afternoon, resident Mavis Eels said: “The atmosphere was amazing, my family joined in and won the 3-legged race and we received a gold medal. I never go a year without watching the Olympics, so to be part of our very own was very special.”

Michelle Sampang, Home Manager at Elizabeth Lodge, said: “Summer sports days are always a highlight for us, as not only is it a fun opportunity to compete in light-hearted games with team members, but also provides an opportunity for us to welcome the local community to see what life is like here at Elizabeth Lodge.

“Keeping fit is important for everyone, but exercise has many additional benefits for older people, from reducing the risk of falls to increasing wellbeing and confidence. Here at Elizabeth Lodge, we know just how important physical activity is, so we always encourage residents to stay active – and our own sporting tournament was a great way to do just that.

“This year’s event provided plenty of laughter and enjoyment for all involved and it was great to see residents meet and mingle with lots of new faces – and some familiar ones – while keeping active. Paris has got nothing on us!”

Elizabeth Lodge is an elegant, purpose-designed care home which provides personalised residential, nursing and respite care for older people, as well as dementia care and compassionate end-of-life care. To ensure that every day is different and enjoyable each resident has a care plan that’s tailored to their unique needs, interests and choices. The home has an extensive activity programme including a gardening club, arts and crafts, cooking and themed events.
