North Shields care home enjoys a day of sport with the local community

Home news

With the Olympics fast approaching, a local care home decided to kick off the summer of sport with their own version of the sporting tournament.

Residents and team members at Care UK’s Collingwood Court brought Paris to North Shields as it opened its doors for local people to enjoy their version of the Games.

The event came as Collingwood Court joined The Big Care UK Sports Day, which sees over 130 Care UK homes across the UK host sports days for the local community and showcase what life in a care home is really like.

Guests were in for an afternoon filled with sporting fun and friendly competition, with the life size board game relay race, bean bag shot put, and giant inflatable discus, a hit with everyone involved.

Visitors rounded off the exciting day with a traditional summer barbecue cooked by the home’s talented Head Chef, Jamie, which they enjoyed while listening to live entertainment from local musician Alex Hall.

Muriel Winters, a resident at Collingwood Court, said: “I thought I was finished with all this sports stuff, but this reminded me how to have fun.”

Joleen Rayner, Home Manager at Collingwood Court, said: “It was wonderful to welcome the local community to join us in our sports day festivities.

“The Olympics have brought about a fantastic opportunity to showcase residents’ own sporting history and passion – and the Care UK sports day was a great way to involve the Tyne and Wear community in the sporting fever.

“It was a brilliant day for everyone involved, with lots of laughter and enjoyment all around. It was also great to see the residents meet and mingle with new faces in the local community – as well as familiar ones – while keeping active.”

Collingwood Court is designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives. The home has plenty of space - both indoors and out - for relaxation and recreation. The home also has a comprehensive activity programme, offering a mix of themed events, group activities and days out.
