Newmarket care home hits the books with local school

Home news

A care home in Newmarket teamed up with a local primary school to celebrate the art of storytelling.

Residents at Care UK’s Kentford Manor, on Jeddah Way, partnered with Kennett Primary School for World Read Aloud Day.

The pupils sat with residents, who had been practising their best character voices, to enjoy a retelling of their favourite stories including Grandpa’s Great Escape, by David Walliams.

Resident Frances Gale, aged 78, said: “It was lovely to see the children and listen to how well they read. They were all so polite and really enjoyed coming to see us as well. I have always enjoyed reading so this really was a treat.”

Katrina Rayment, General Manager at Kentford Manor, said: “Here at Kentford Manor, we enjoy working closely with the local community, and were delighted to celebrate World Read Aloud Day with the pupils from Kennett Primary School.

“We understand how beneficial intergenerational activities can be for both older and younger people alike. It can help encourage a strong sense of wellbeing and purpose in residents, while both generations can enjoy learning from each other. It was heartwarming to see the residents reminiscing over their favourite stories and sharing happy memories with the pupils.

“We are already looking forward to welcoming back the pupils from Kennett Primary School very soon.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Kentford Manor incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a number of suites to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
