National care inspectors praise East Kilbride care home

A national care watchdog has given an East Kilbride care home its seal of approval, with relatives and residents praising its caring team members.

The Care Inspectorate, the regulator for health and social care in Scotland, rated Care UK’s Cathkin House, on Glasgow Road, ‘very good’ in two categories; support for resident wellbeing and its team, following an unannounced inspection.

The home was also rated ‘good’ in leadership, the home’s setting and planning of care and support.

Behind these high scores is the home’s dedicated activity team, which regularly organise a range of meaningful activities for residents, including visits to the local football stadiums or shopping trips.

Encouraging residents to lead fulfilling lives, members of the lifestyle team also help to grant resident wishes, with one wish seeing residents go on a fishing trip and then get to cook what they caught. The team also empowers residents to be independent, giving them opportunities to get involved with daily tasks at the home, such as cooking, should they wish to.

One relative commented: “My mum is like a changed person since coming to Cathkin House. She can now do things for herself again and is so much better than she was at home”.

The report also highlighted the holistic approach to care promoted at the home and the “meaningful relationships” team members have formed with residents, spending time getting to know them and always treating residents with “compassion, kindness and respect”.

Inspectors noted how this “welcoming environment” put residents at ease, allowing team members to better support those in their care to live independent and fulfilling lives.

One relative said: “The home has been a god send. I have peace of mind knowing my mum is safe and well looked after”.

Senior team members were described as approachable and “responsive”, and keen to listen to new ideas. Echoing this sentiment, members of the team reported feeling listened to, praising the “open and supportive style of management” promoted at the home.

Nisha Sujeewon, Home Manager at Cathkin House, said: “Being awarded a ‘good’ Inspectorate rating in all categories, including two ‘very good’ ratings, truly reflects the passion of our team members who ensure each and every resident receives high-quality, tailored care, and we’re thrilled with the result.

“We have a fantastic team here at Cathkin House and it is through their dedication and enthusiasm that we are able to support residents to lead active and fulfilling lives. I’d like to thank everyone at the home for their continued commitment, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families.”

To assess service standards at Cathkin House, the Care Inspectorate inspectors spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home. According to The Care Inspectorate, Care UK is the top-rated private care provider in Scotland.

Cathkin House provides dementia, nursing and nursing dementia care, and has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and has plenty of space indoor, and out, to relax.
