Glasgow care home residents invite the community for Harvest Festival fun

A care home in Glasgow is inviting the community to celebrate the Harvest Festival.

On Saturday 28th September, from 2pm-5pm, residents at Care UK’s Cathkin House, on Glasgow Road, is inviting the community for an a-maize-ing afternoon to celebrate the annual festival.

Guests can enjoy an afternoon learning about the origins of the festival, what it means for today’s society, and why this long-standing tradition should not be forgotten.

On the day, there will be live entertainment from Shelia K and Head Chef, John McGee will be baking cupcakes and shortbread served alongside tea and coffee.

There’ll be fun for all the family, with activities for younger visitors including painting, bowling and parachute games, as well as a face painter. The team has been busy decorating the home ahead of the event and will be adorned with autumnal leaves and hay made from recycled paper.

To celebrate this year’s Harvest Festival, residents and team members are also encouraging the local community to donate their extra, unused or unwanted non-perishable food items to Glasgow’s new foodbank drop-off-point – located in the care home’s entrance and will be open 2pm to 5pm. Residents have already been busy making homemade jam, using left over fruits, to add to the donation.

Each year, Harvest Festival celebrates the time when crops have been gathered from fields and people can reflect and show gratitude for the food that they have. It dates back to when people relied on local crops for food and famers would give thanks for a good harvest.

Nisha Sujeewon, Home Manager at Cathkin House, said: “We’re all looking forward to welcoming the community to Cathkin House to celebrate the annual Harvest Festival tradition and explore its importance today.

“Harvest Festival is a day in the calendar where we can reflect and show gratitude for the food that we have, while serving as an opportunity to connect with others, regardless of age or background, and celebrate the cultural diversity which helps make Glasgow a great place to call home.

“Everyone is looking forward to an a-maize-ing day!”

Cathkin House provides dementia, nursing and nursing dementia care, and has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence.
