“Marry a good cook”– the secret to a long marriage revealed by Newbury residents

Love was in the air at a local care home in Newbury when two residents celebrated a very special milestone. 

Geoffrey Mills, 92, and his wife Diane, 81, toasted their 62^nd wedding anniversary at Care UK’s Newbury Grove, on London Road, where they both live. 

The couple initially met when Diane was on a date with one of Geoffrey’s friends, Roger, but “cheeky” Diane met Geoffrey in a pub after her date. Diane then began a very happy and long relationship with Geoffrey, who would go on to become the love of her life.  

 

The couple married on 10 June 1961 in St. Andrews Church, Hartcliffe. Commenting on the day, Geoff said: “Diane was a vision – absolutely beautiful as she walked up the aisle. I felt like the luckiest man to be marrying such a beautiful and bright woman.”

The couple bought their first home in Yate where they had their first child, Carole. Soon after, the couple moved to Headley Park where Mandy and Andrew were born. After all the children were born, Geoffrey was determined to find their dream family home, which they eventually found in Nailsea. 

Diane and Geoffrey have six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who regularly visit the couple at Newbury Grove. 

Commenting on the secret to a happy marriage, Diane said: “Share everything – discuss all your hopes and dreams and work together. Teamwork is the dream work!”

Geoffrey said: “A hubby should always say to his wife ‘I agree’ – that way she won’t argue. Marrying a good cook helps too!”
