“Be happy always” – the secret to a long life according to 101-year-old Woolmer Green care home resident

A 101-year-old Woolmer Green care home resident has revealed her secret to living a long and happy life.   

Florence ‘Flo’ Taberer, from Care UK’s Knebworth, on London Road, marked her 101^st birthday on 1^st June. Reflecting on her many happy years, Flo shared that her motto for a successful life is ‘don’t worry and be happy always’.

To mark the big day, Flo’s family paid her a special visit, and the team decorated the home with balloons and banners, and the home’s talented chef baked a special birthday cake for everyone to enjoy. 

Commenting on her big day, Flo said: “I had a wonderful day – it feels great to be 101. You just have to make the most of it!”

Vera Moreira-Henocq, Home Manager at Knebworth, added: “Flo is a much-loved resident at Knebworth and it was wonderful to be part of her special day.

“We work hard to support residents to lead fulfilling lives, and marking special occasions and birthdays plays a huge part in this. We love any excuse to celebrate the amazing people living here at Knebworth and Flo’s birthday was no exception. Everyone had a wonderful time toasting Flo’s birthday and listening to her share memories from her long life.

“We were honoured to raise a toast to Flo’s incredible life so far and are privileged to have her as part of our Knebworth family.” 

Flo was born in Edmonton, London. As a child, Flo enjoyed spending time at her grandfather’s farm, helping care for and feed the animals.

 Flo and her husband, Leslie, were married in Edmonton in 1945 – together they have two children, Raymond and Linda, and two grandchildren, Jason and Christine. Flo lived in Edmonton until her early 60s, when she moved to Hatfield.

In her younger days, Flo worked in a canteen as a chef as part of the military. In her spare time, Flo enjoyed trips to the theatre with her husband and son – now, Flo enjoys keeping her mind active with reading and game shows.

Knebworth is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia and short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
