A national care watchdog has given a care home in Fareham its seal of approval, with relatives and residents praising the caring and attentive team members.
The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report, which regulates all health and social care services in England, gave Care UK’s Parker Meadows, on Parker View, an overall ‘good’ rating following an unannounced inspection.
The care home received the ‘good’ rating in all five categories, which includes safety, effectiveness, care, being responsive and well-led.
Inspectors were particularly impressed with the positive culture within the home. The team provided a welcoming and calm environment adapted to meet resident's needs and noted it was maintained to a high standard. One relative said: “The team are kind, caring and patient. They speak kindly to [my relative] and handle her very well and I'm reassured that there's an experienced senior person on the floor who knows about dementia."
Another relative added: “They have been fantastic here, they are taking [my relative] to a football match and I brought [my relative] in a football chart for the world cup but they [team] had already got him one!"
The report also highlighted residents were supported with their spiritual needs. Matthew Smith, the General Manager, told the inspectors: “The home encourages a positive approach to diversity. The team has created a culture which values and respects difference.” The inspectors saw a display board was being used to help educate team members, visitors and residents about the subjects of transgender and gender neutrality. Matthew added: “The aim was to create conversations and encourage understanding and learning.”
Inspectors noted a central communal 'bistro' area provided a space for people to meet each other, their visitors and for activities. Other facilities the inspectors were impressed by included the hairdressing salon, library, and the home’s well-tended, accessible garden.
They were also impressed by the memory care floor which accommodates people living with dementia. This space had been modified to provide residents with an engaging environment. There were tactile boards on the walls with gardening and housekeeping themes, objects of interest for residents to handle, and a specialised table where individuals could play projected interactive tabletop games.
The inspector’s saw that residents were supported to eat and drink according to their wishes, tastes and health conditions. A relative told them: "The food is excellent."
General Manager at Parker Meadows, Matthew Smith, said: “Parker Meadows' team has worked tirelessly to ensure that we provide a true home-away-from-home for all residents and their families, and so everyone is thrilled to achieve the good rating.
"It's fantastic to see the CQC praise our efforts in helping residents live a happy and fulfilled lives.
"Receiving a 'good' rating shows just how dedicated the team are to caring after every individual's needs, and we will continue our hard work to ensure residents receive compassionate, person-centred care. I want to congratulate the team for their hard work, which I know is appreciated by the residents and their families."
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Parker Meadows incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The home provides full-time residential care, nursing care, dementia care and respite care in addition to Independent Living Bungalows. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
