A care home in Cambridge is inviting the community to a free, virtual event for those living with, or caring for loved ones with, dementia.
On Wednesday 16th February, from 10am-11am, Care UK’s Heathlands House, on Bullen Close, will be hosting its ‘Living Well with Dementia’ event.
Peter Berry, co-author of ‘Slow Puncture: Living Well With Dementia’ and participant in Channel 4’s The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes, will use his own knowledge and experience to discuss what it’s like to live with the condition, and the importance of remaining in the present. Diagnosed with early onset dementia at the age of 50, Peter will share personal insights from his journey with the condition and how this has impacted his family, discuss financial implications, and will also be on hand to answer questions.
The expert team at Heathlands House will also offer support and practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with the condition.
Sharlene Van Tonder, Home Manager at Heathlands House, said: “There are currently 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK – and it is estimated that a further 209,600 individuals will develop it this year alone*. We know that this also means many families will be affected too, so our event aims to offer professional knowledge and insight to those who need it – as well as providing a hub for shared experiences.
Dementia is often misunderstood as only affecting older people, which is why we want younger people to know they’re not alone, and we’re here to offer support. We’re looking forward to welcoming local people virtually for an inspiring afternoon of information and guidance.
For anyone unsure about how to take part in the virtual event, help is at hand. The team at Heathlands House will host the joint event using Teams, which is very easy to use. Simply call or email Customer Relations Manager, Tanya Jackson-Turner, to receive a link to join the event, as well as Tanya’s tips to make the most out of the session.
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Heathlands House incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities both indoors and out. The layout of the building has been configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge and dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities
