A care home in Horsham is celebrating after being highly commended at a national awards ceremony.
Care UK’s Skylark House, on St Marks Lane, attained the commendation in the ‘Best Individual Care Home in a Group’ category at the Care Home Awards thanks to the support residents receive to be as independent as possible and enjoy each day to the full.
An annual celebration, the Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in UK care home management, operation and delivery, and this year took place virtually.
The team at Skylark House takes pride in encouraging residents to be as independent as they can be, with many playing an active role in home life, enjoying the many facilities available, including a cinema, café and pub.
The strong social and leisure aspects of life at Skylark House made the care home stand out against the tough competition. The lifestyle team organises an array of activities and entertainment, from film afternoons to flower arranging, and, prior to lockdown restrictions being implemented, outings, including shopping trips, and special visitors for musical performances and pet therapy sessions.
The home also has a wishing tree where residents are encouraged to hang wishes of things they’d like to do or see. Colleagues then work with relatives to make these dreams come true. One resident, Audrey, had her wish come true to ride a horse on her 100th birthday, and another resident, Rose, spent a weekend in Paris.
One resident commented on life at Skylark House: “We’re surrounded by love – just really well looked after.”
Dorota Woloszyn, home manager at Skylark House, said: “It is wonderful to have been highly commended in the ‘Best Individual Care Home in a Group’ category in the Care Home Awards.
“This award is testament to the team’s hard work and determination to ensure every resident leads a happy and fulfilling life, and that has been even more important over the last few months. The team has worked incredibly hard to ensure residents’ lives have remained as normal as possible, and I’m very proud of the environment we’ve created here at Skylark House. Congratulations everyone!”
Skylark House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite and palliative care.
