‘A ray of sunshine’ – Sidcup care home hero crowned

‘A ray of sunshine’ – Sidcup care home hero crownedA care home in Sidcup has praised a resident for her support and positivity throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Vera Ward, a resident at Care UK’s Smyth Lodge, on Frognal Avenue, has been named a ‘Care UK Hero’ for her bubbly personality and support throughout the past few months.

The nomination was shared as part of a nationwide search for Care UK Heroes throughout its 122 care homes. From outstanding colleagues, to residents who have ensured morale remains high, this competition aims to shine a light on these exceptional people.

88-year-old Vera was praised for her positive, upbeat attitude throughout the last few months. A former cleaner at Buckingham Palace, she is dedicated to supporting the team around the home, whether that be gardening with the maintenance team or helping the housekeeping team. She also offered ‘Thank you’ cards and small gifts to the team to mark Carers’ Week.

Vera said: “I am pleased to have been nominated for this, but to be honest, I like to serve others as it gives me great joy. When anyone walks into my suite, the first thing I like to ask them is what drink I can get for them as I know a cuppa can bring us together, and then we can start chatting. It is in my nature to serve others.”

Roda Williams, home manager at Smyth Lodge, said: “Vera is a true ray of sunshine, and we’re all incredibly lucky she’s a part of the Smyth Lodge family.

“It’s been a challenging few months, but she never stopped looking on the bright side and has never ceased to amaze us day after day. I know the team was touched with how thoughtful her cards and gifts were, and as a former cleaner at Buckingham Palace, she always has stories and tips to share.

“From our nurses and lifestyle coordinators, to our housekeepers and chefs, as well as residents, everyone has done a tremendous job over the past few months, and I cannot thank Vera, the residents, and the team enough for continuing to make Smyth Lodge a wonderful place to live.”

Smyth Lodge has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential dementia and nursing care, as well as respite care.
