Residents at a care home in Thorrington celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!
This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Silversprings, on Tenpenny Hill, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.
As part of the celebrations, the home welcomed Kayla’s Owls to give residents the opportunity to get close to some magnificent creatures. Everyone enjoyed the special ‘show and tell’ session and learned more about our feathered friends.
Team members and residents also recorded the number of birds and other wildlife species that visited the care home’s garden – data which will be used by the RSPB to monitor trends and understand how different species are doing.
Donna Cousins, home manager at Silversprings, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Silversprings, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s Birdwatch event.
“Animal therapy can be extremely beneficial for older people – especially for those living with dementia. Being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood, stimulate social interaction and ease agitation. Connecting with nature can also help to conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.
“I’d like to say thank you to Kayla’s Owls for joining us and making the day so special. Residents certainly had a fantastic time celebrating the best of British birds!”
