A picture paints a thousand birds at Kingston Vale care homeResidents at a care home in Kingstone Vale celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!\

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch inspired activities took place over the weekend and residents at Care UK’s Sherwood Grange, on Robin Hood Lane, celebrated the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.\

As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by Robin Hood Primary School for a morning of bird-themed activities, including a bird quiz.

Residents also created ceramic flying ducks. These were painted, then fired in a kiln to set and will be displayed on the wall in reception – complete with vintage wallpaper, to add to the retro atmosphere.

Rick Mayne, home manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Sherwood Grange, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event.

“Connecting with nature in usual ways, such as creating these ceramic ducks, can be extremely beneficial for older people, as it promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation.

“I’d like to say thank you to Robin Hood Primary School for joining us and making the day so special. The residents had great fun testing each other’s knowledge and the pupils in the bird quiz – we look forward to welcoming them back soon!”
