Epsom care home hits the right note with opera evening

Epsom residents spent a tuneful evening with professional opera performers at a local care home.

For the third year running, Care UK’s Appleby House, on Longmead Road, opened its doors to the community for a night of classical opera music.

The sell-out event was held in partnership with Arts in Care Homes, an initiative which aims to bring music to everyone living with dementia by 2020, and with BBC Music Day 2019, focused on music and wellbeing.

On the day, residents and visitors enjoyed performances from high baritone James Schouten, mezzo-soprano Louisa Barry, singer Susan Clark and pianist Andrew Davies. To top the evening off, guests were treated to a tasty buffet, specially prepared by Appleby House’s chefs, and a variety of drinks.

Shona Bradbury, home manager at Appleby House, said: “As part of our activity-based care approach, we’re always looking to plan exciting activities for residents. The previous opera evenings have been a real success, and proved that many residents had a keen interest in classical music, so we were delighted to be hosting our tuneful event for the community once more.

“James, Louisa and Susan delivered a beautiful and touching performance, and the feedback from residents and guests has been overwhelming. We would like to say a big thank you to the singers and musicians for a fantastic opera evening. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!”

Appleby House has been designed to provide residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as respite, and end of life care.
