Back to the drawing board – Thorrington residents set to celebrate the arts

Preparations are underway as Care UK’s Silversprings, on Tenpenny Hill, gears up to join the world’s largest drawing festival this October.

Residents and team members will be taking part in a variety of creative activities to showcase their artistic skills, including creating an artistic timeline of the life of Silversprings resident, Sonia Redway, who was the subject of one of British artist, Stanley Spencer’s, famous paintings.

The home has also invited Little Pals Nursery to join them for the occasion, and to help to create an ongoing piece of artwork on a continuous sheet of paper, resulting in one final, collaborative masterpiece.

Launched in 2000 as part of the ‘Campaign for Drawing’, the Big Draw promotes drawing as a tool for learning, expression and invention, and has encouraged over four million people to get arty since its inception. This year’s theme, ‘drawn to life’, celebrates the benefits of creative activities, especially of drawing, on health and wellbeing. 2019 also marks the bicentenary of John Ruskin’s birth, founder of the Guild of St George, the charitable education trust behind the initiative.

Donna Cousins, home manager at Silversprings, said: “We’ve got our pencils at the ready and we’re raring to go for this year’s Big Draw Festival!

“Drawing is an accessible activity that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy together, and has fantastic benefits for residents living with dementia especially, by offering them an alternative way to communicate or share their emotions and thoughts, as well as an opportunity to reminisce.

“We’re thrilled to be welcoming Little Pals Nursery to the home – everyone at Silversprings is really looking forward to getting their creative juices flowing.”

Silversprings is a modern care home set in attractive grounds and designed to support residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives. It provides residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
