Try is the limit: Sherwood Grange makes wish come true

Sherwood Grange has made a dream come true for two residents, by organising a trip to Twickenham stadium to watch a rugby match.  

When team members at Sherwood Grange heard that residents Jean Morgan and Irene Weller had made a wish to watch a live rugby match, they set about making it a reality. 

Irene is 96 years old and has followed rugby since she was a teenager, but hasnever been to see a live rugby match, so it was her wish to be able to watch England play.

Accompanying Irene at the match, Jean, aged 89, has also had a lifelong love for the sport, and is a proud Welsh national, so went to the match to support Wales. 

Sherwood Grange took both ladies to the England vs Wales Rugby World Cup warm up match on 11thAugust. The resident got to watch the live match from specialist seats where they both cheered on their teams. 

Rick Mayne, home manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “Both Jean and Irene were over the moon when we told them we’d organised the visit to Twickenham. Both ladies have a lifelong passion for the sport, so being able to take them to not only the best rugby stadium in the world, but also to a game to support their national teams, was a visit we’ll all never forget.

“It’s so important that residents living in a care home continue to live fulfilling lives and continue to enjoy their passions. The team here is constantly thinking of interesting and fun things for residents to take part in, while encouraging independence, and making wishes come true is one of our fantastic ways to do this!”

Irene said: “The team were all wonderful, this is the only live match I have ever been to and I am most impressed.”

Jean said: “The atmosphere is electric; rugby is amazing they have no separation between the fans like you have in football matches. I do wish Wales had won; however, I did my share of standing up cheering them on so that’s all I can do. The stadium is an amazing place though, what an experience!”
