Sherwood Grange throws a party to mark the 65th anniversary of rock ‘n’ roll

Residents at Sherwood Grange stepped back in time and danced away the afternoon to the sound of rock ‘n’ roll classics from their youth. 

Sherwood Grange threw the 1950s-themed celebration to mark the 65th anniversary of the launch of the record Rock Around the Clock, widely considered Britain’s first rock ‘n’ roll anthem. 

To celebrate, the home welcomed dancer Katie Lewis, who performed a routine, aptly called ‘Tap Around The Clock’. The tap dancers jived along to songs from the rock ‘n’ roll era, and both residents and team members joined in.  

The nationwide initiative, launched by Care UK, encouraged its care homes across the country to get together and host rock ‘n’ roll-themed events to mark this iconic anniversary. As well as having fun, the events were the perfect opportunity for residents to reminisce about their younger years and share memories associated with the 1950s.

Rick Mayne, home manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “Music is always popular in this home, so we all thoroughly enjoyed the 1950s music and dancing. It also gave us all a good excuse to chat about people’s memories – we learnt a lot about how rock ‘n’ roll music suddenly became popular with young people and the friction it caused with some of their parents. Music is a great way to reminisce and can even bring back long-forgotten memories for people living with dementia.”
