Asterbury Place celebrates ‘outstanding’ results following inspection

Asterbury Place has been awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating, by the national care watchdog following relatives and residents praising its extremely high level of care, tailored to meet residents’ personal needs at the recent unannounced inspection. 

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report awarded Asterbury Place an ‘outstanding’ rating for its level of care, having a well-led and responsive service.

Inspectors commented on how knowledgeable and skilled the team at Asterbury Place are, and how they ensured that care was provided in a compassionate and caring way.

During the inspection, relatives of the residents told inspectors how impressed they were with the care from the team and how residents felt they had a special relationship with them. One resident told inspectors: “They give me a hug when they come in. They're like family. They ask who the people are in my pictures [in my room]. It's nice to talk about family."

Residents were encouraged to be independent and make proactive choices, such as going out alone, going to the shops, or gardening. One resident commented: "I make my own decisions. I can still do that. They don't do anything unless it's been agreed with me."

In the report it was noted that the home offered a wide range of activities, including catering for residents living with dementia. A gardening club and a 'shed club' is also being introduced, and the home uses a music trolley that the team can take around the home to each resident to play their favourite songs, sing along, and talk about the memories they bring back. A resident commented: "[The music machine]’s very nice. I enjoy music." The home also has a resident dog, Martha, and uses animal therapy to encourage movement and reduce isolation. 

It was highlighted how the home played an active part in the community. Regular visits and talks were arranged, including a presentation from a local bird enthusiast to participate in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch, as well as children from a local nursery who visited once a month. 

Home manager at Asterbury Place, Christine Da Silva, said: “I was thrilled when we heard the news. I have the most amazing team, from the nurses, carers and lifestyle coordinators, to the chefs, administrators and domestic and maintenance teams. They are committed to delivering extremely high levels of care and support: for them, good is never good enough. 

“The team works hard to involve and consult residents and relatives about all aspects of their care, even when dementia has affected the residents’ ability to communicate. This takes time, patience and skill, but it is crucial in giving people dignity and choice.”

Care UK’s regional director, Phillip Steyn, said: “The comments from inspectors, residents and relatives capture the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere that Christine and her team have created. From the moment you walk through the door you know Asterbury Place is a warm, caring and happy place to be.
