Cumberland's 106-year-old reveals secret to long life

Home news

Cumberland has celebrated the 106th birthday of a popular resident who has attributed her long life to taking time to relax and being pampered.

Marjorie ‘Marj’ Augarde celebrated the impressive milestone with friends and residents at Cumberland care home in Mitcham with a ‘showtime’ themed party, complete with a red carpet entrance.

Guests were serenaded by soprano singer, Linda Watts, and enjoyed performances from a show-girl group. Everyone toasted Marjorie’s good health with a glass of wine and tucked into a slice of birthday cake. Special guest Councillor Mary Curtin also attended the celebrations.

Revealing the secret to living to 106, Marj said: “Age is just a number to me, and I think the secret to a longer life is making sure you take time out to be pampered - I swear by my favourite moisturiser, Oil of Olay, to keep me looking younger! It’s important to relax and do things that make you happy.”

Mariana Motocu, home manager at Cumberland, said: “We always like to make an occasion of birthdays, and Marj’s 106th birthday is no exception. We made sure that she had a great day and went the extra mile to throw a ‘showtime’ themed birthday party for her. It was lovely to be able to join Marj to celebrate such a wonderful occasion - I will definitely be taking a leaf out of Marj’s book and making sure I look after myself and get a manicure booked!”
