Local woman names town’s newest care home

A local lady has won a competition to name a brand new care home in Sidcup.   

Yvonne Davies, from Sidcup, took part in a competition to name the new home on Frognal Avenue, which opens early next year.  

The competition called for the people who know the town best, its residents, to share suggestions which had cultural or historical reference to the town. 

Yvonne came up with Smyth Lodge in honour of Dame Ethel Mary Smyth – a prominent member of the women’s suffragette movement who was born in Sidcup. 

Daniel Turner -Naylor, regional director at Care UK, said: “The home naming process is one of the key milestones for the new home, so it was important to involve the community in the decision. All of the names put forward were of a very high quality, but we felt Smyth Lodge was original and really rooted the home in the local area. 

“We’re so grateful to everyone that made a name suggestion and Yvonne for coming up with the winning name.” 

Yvonne said: “I have lived in the Sidcup area for many years, so when the opportunity arose to be a part of the town’s history, I leapt at the chance. 

“I am delighted Smyth Lodge has been selected and think it’s a lovely way of preserving the heritage of Sidcup and celebrating the history of the town – and the people who live here.”
