‘Outstanding’ – national watchdog rates Cleves Place

Cleves Place has been awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating by the national care watchdog – with residents and relatives praising its remarkably caring and attentive team members.

Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report awarded Cleves Place an ‘outstanding’ rating in both its responsiveness and exceptionally caring service, resulting in an overall ‘outstanding’ rating.

Inspectors commented on the ethos of the home and how it is one focused on residents. They were commended for treating residents as individuals and with respect, while seeking their thoughts and opinions.

The report also highlighted how a co-operative and inclusive nature is embedded in the home, with residents clearly being at the forefront of the care provided. One resident said: “When I want to go to the shops one of the carers just comes with me,” demonstrating the personal care provided to each resident based on their specific needs and wishes.

Credit was given to the team for centring their efforts on residents by including them in all processes and decisions. It was noted that the team’s willingness to spend time with, and getting to know residents, was clearly appreciated by their loved ones. A relative commented, “The level of care at Cleves Place is excellent. All [team members] are extremely proud of the care home and are keen to provide a ‘home-from-home’ for every resident.”

Key social features of the home were commented on, including the in-house cinema, the ‘Stowbridge Café’, and the care home’s pub, the ‘Dog and Parrot’, both of which were named by residents. The report highlighted how the introduction of the home’s ‘sweet and knick-knack shop’, with bay window displays and a range of items for people to purchase, created a stimulating shopping experience for residents.

Inspectors commented on how the team had created a homely environment with communal areas decorated in such a way to make them dementia-friendly. Different colours, names, pictures and memory boxes had been added to some bedroom doors to assist residents in identifying their rooms.

Commenting on the ‘outstanding’ rating, home manager at Cleves Place, Sally Shadbolt, said: “I’m delighted the CQC’s inspectors have rated us ‘outstanding’. We strive to create a caring, supportive atmosphere for residents so it’s brilliant to have all of our hard work recognised by the national care regulator.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team, and our ‘outstanding’ rating just shows the dedication and commitment each one of them has to making Cleves Place a fantastic place to live. We really are like one big family. I would like to say thank you for their hard work – something which I know is echoed by the residents’ families here at the home”.
