Broadwater Lodge nominated for national award

Broardwater Lodge is celebrating having been nominated in the Best Individual Care Home category in a national care award.

Broadwater Lodge is a finalist in the Best Individual Care Home category at the Care Home Awards, thanks to the considered approach within the home and the enthusiasm of its kind and caring team members.

The Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation for UK care home management, operation and delivery.

Every resident at the home has an individual life history book which gives team members insight into their past and present life. The team also use these life history books to guide the activities they plan and the menus they create, to ensure that there is something on offer for everyone.

The team at Broadwater Lodge have adopted an activity based care approach, meaning that residents are supported to be as active and independent as possible.

The home itself has been created to encourage residents to build relationships with others at the home. Each suite has its own lounge and dining area, helping to create a ‘community within a community’ feeling. This helps create a calm and settled atmosphere, and is also helpful for residents living with dementia.

The team at Broadwater Lodge are continuously developing the home, most recently having created a ‘pet corner’, where relatives and team members can bring their pets in for residents to spend time with, and opened its own pub, The Stumbling Inn. They have also started work on renovating the garden to include flower beds, giving residents the opportunity to grow their own plants.

The home also has its own feathered friends living in the garden. After a resident expressed that she would like to keep chickens, the team members at the home helped build a chicken coup and bought four pet chickens, which residents now enjoy looking after.

Angela Bookham, home manager at Broadwater Lodge, said: “We are thrilled to have been nominated for Best Individual Care Home at this year’s Care Home Awards.

“At Broadwater Lodge, we place great emphasis on individuals to ensure that everything they do or experience is meaningful and life enhancing for them. Our activity-based approach to care means that residents are welcome to help around the home, and our extensive range of activities and regular outings aim to offer something for everyone.

“As well as this, we are always looking at how we can improve the home to offer residents exciting things to do. All of our residents love seeing the team members’ pets so creating a ‘pet corner’ seemed like the perfect fit. For those who enjoy the outdoors, we have already started work on the garden and our beach-themed area will be a great place to relax.”

Broadwater Lodge recently achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating in a report by the national care watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Broadwater Lodge provides full time residential and dementia care, as well as short term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
