Accompanied by her niece, Rosalind, staff at Heatherbrook made personalised cards, cakes and decorations to celebrate Winnie’s birthday.
Winnie from Romford, East London, was born and lived with her parents in a Police House, as her father was the local police officer. Here, she lived with her brother, Jim and Sister, Ilene.
For most of her life, Winnie worked as the head wages clerk at the local civic centre in Dagenham, and she continued to work until she was sixty. Winnie was very well known locally as she cycled everywhere at every opportunity. Winnie recalls how she also used to love ballroom dancing and how she always had to make her own dresses to go dancing; she said her favourite dress was one that she made out of a silk nighty.
Winnie also remembers the queen’s coronation well, as she stayed up all night in a hall to see the event, and some of the other residents in the home even call her the Queen of Heatherbrook. Winnie had a fantastic time celebrating such a milestone birthday at Heatherbrook care home, saying how much she loves it there as everyone treats her like she was their own family member.
