The pub was installed at the residents’ request and has been named the QE2 Tavern in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday this year.
The QE2 Tavern is situated at the back of the care home’s cinema room and features a fully functioning bar with an ale pump and a brass bell to ‘call time’, as well as a pool table for residents to enjoy. The familiar setting with traditional décor has many benefits, especially for those living with dementia, as it sparks memories of times spent enjoying a pint at the local pub. It’s also a place where residents can enjoy their favourite tipple whilst socialising with friends and relatives.
Katy Hughes, home manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: “The pub idea and its name in honour of Her Majesty’s special birthday were both voted for by residents, for the residents. We believe it’s really important for older people to keep active and involved in everyday activities and to continue enjoying the things they love, which is why the pub is an excellent addition to Mildenhall Lodge.”
