The international day aims to create lasting links between care home residents and their local communities, and to develop relationships across the generations.
The events at Prince George House and Asterbury Place in Ipswich and Mills Meadow in Framlingham, will be amongst thousands taking place across the UK to help challenge perceptions about the care environment and to show what day-to-day life is like for residents. On Thursday 16th June residents and colleagues at Asterbury Place will be welcoming visitors from 10am to 4pm for a bird and butterfly themed event. There will be a number of activities throughout the day, including a nature quiz and a flower art class with local wildlife artist Ken Oliver. There will also be tours of the home’s gardens and a display of arts and crafts created by residents and members at the adjacent Asterbury Club.
Also in Ipswich, residents and colleagues at Prince George House will be opening their doors on Friday 17th June, from 11am to 4pm for a Royal themed event in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday this year. There will be a coffee morning, street party lunch, pamper sessions with The Body Shop and musical entertainment by Aspire Theatre.
In Framlingham, residents and colleagues at Mills Meadow care home will be celebrating Care Home Open Day with two events. On Friday 17th June the home will be open from 2pm to 4.30pm, serving traditional cream teas in the coffee shop area. On Saturday 18th June from 11am to 4pm there will be ballroom dancing, various stalls and games and a barbecue lunch prepared by the home’s chef.
Marie Reeve, home manager at Mills Meadow, said: “We are really looking forward to taking part in this year’s Care Home Open Day and to sharing with the community what life is like at Mills Meadow. Visitors can expect a warm welcome at our fun event for all the family.”
Care Home Open Day is also an opportunity for visitors to meet the Care UK teams and pick up copies of Care UK’s free guides which are full of practical hints and tips to support family carers and their loved ones living with dementia. These include ‘Listen, talk, connect’, ‘As Easy as ABC’, ‘Good to Go’ and the new ‘Eating as we age’ guide which provides practical tips and recipe ideas for eating well in older age.
