Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre celebrates its 10th birthday

For a decade the team here at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre has produced outstanding care for people across the county and beyond, so celebrating our 10th anniversary seemed only fitting, especially with the superb cake created by our very own chef.

Since we opened our doors to the public, 4,632 hip replacements and 4,538 knee replacements, along with many thousands of hours of physiotherapy, have enabled people to live healthy, independent and pain-free lives. Thanks to 16,311 cataract operations, people across the region can also see more clearly, enjoy reading and can carry on working and driving. And 15,338 endoscopies have led to either diagnosis and reassurance or diagnosis and treatment to put our patients on the road to recovery.

To celebrate we invited back our very first patient Mrs Beryl Hockey, from Wells, to cut the exceptional piece of architectural cake construction created by chef Kevin Wollaston.

Mrs Hockey, who says she had a wonderful time, was joined by her ophthalmic surgeon of 10 years ago, Mr Javad Moayedi, and 24 other colleagues who also joined us back in 2005.

Hospital Director Chester Barnes reflected on the centre’s 10 years of achievement. “Treatment centres were a very new initiative and we had a wonderful team who saw the possibilities of creating an exceptional service. They have worked hard to realise their vision of providing excellent care with the very best of medical outcomes in a warm and friendly environment.

“During these 10 years we have won prestigious healthcare awards for innovation and received glowing reports from the Care Quality Commission as well as our patients.

“I was very proud to spend the day celebrating with colleagues and patients and I look forward to continuing our journey together, setting the standard for secondary care in the coming years.”
