Care home raises curtain on new cinema hall and coffee shop

A new cinema and coffee shop at Care UK’s West Drayton care home, The Burroughs, have been unveiled, with 99-year old Joan Burgin – the care home’s oldest resident – helping to perform the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Joan, who will celebrate her 100th birthday in December, has lived at The Burroughs for seven years. She was joined by her son, Gerry Burgin, to officially open the new ‘Regency’ cinema room at the care home. 84-year old resident, Elsie Palmer, and 82-year old resident, Jane Wilson, were then joined by Susan Barber, daughter of resident, Rosina McCarthy, to cut the ribbon and mark the opening of the new ‘Bizzy Lizzy’ coffee shop.

The Burroughs’ activities co-ordinators, Janet Robson and Carol Hancock, organised an afternoon of fun celebrations for residents and their families, with the 1950s classic movie Oklahoma chosen to be the first film screened in the new cinema. Live entertainment from local singer, Mick Ryan, also helped everyone to get into the party spirit.

Home manager, Josephine Thomas, said: “Everyone at The Burroughs is incredibly excited about the new cinema and coffee shop, and we wanted to take the opportunity to commemorate their official opening in style. It was important to all of us that the residents and families who will be making the most of these fantastic new facilities should be at the heart of the celebrations, so Joan and Gerry and Rosina and Susan were invited to perform the all-important ribbon cuttings.

“We are now looking forward to seeing residents and their families spending time together watching their favourite movies and sharing a box of popcorn in the comfort of the plush new Regency cinema, or catching up over a leisurely cuppa and a slice of cake in the Bizzy Lizzy coffee shop.  These wonderful new spaces will certainly enhance the daily experiences of residents, and will support them in continuing to lead sociable, active and fulfilled lives.”
